Description:The main entrance to The Ring, Great Haywood.
By 1810, the village on the Shugborough estate had gone. The cottages were purchased one-by-one and demolished as their leases expired. Many of the villagers had moved to new locations in Great Haywood. One was known as The Ring due to the hollow heptagonal construction of the buildings. The Ring was the work of Samuel Wyatt, who also designed Shugborough’s Stafford and Lichfield Lodges.
The cottages were joined, but their entrance doors opened onto an inner courtyard; in the centre of the court was a communal oven, and each cottage had its own place for fuel. One of the buildings was used as a school for the children of the village.
The Ring was demolished in 1965. The name has been retained for a development of detached bungalows on the site which are arranged radially around a central access road.
