Description:Izaak Walton's birthplace, Eastgate Street. The building was being used as a coach house and stables when this photograph was taken, but it was demolished in 1888 and the site is now occupied by the police station. Izaak Walton (1593 - 1683) was a famous angler and author whose best known work 'The Complete Angler' was published 1653 and is still in print. Walton was born in Stafford and was baptised at St. Mary's Church, although he spent much of his early life in London. He returned to Staffordshire in his later years and the cottage in Shallowford, Half Head Farm, where he spent his retirement, has now been restored and opened as a museum.
