Description:Pictured outside St. Bartholomew's Church porch are the men from Butterton who returned home after serving in the Armed during World War I. Butterton has the unusual status of being a Doubly Thankful Village: all the village's men who went to war in both World Wars returned safely.
Back row (left to right): Reuben Salt, William E. Henshall, A.J. Hambleton (Churchwarden), Rev. R.J. Crump (Vicar).
Middle row: Thomas Wheeldon, Ralph Millward, Samson Salt, Arthur Poyser, Charles Birch, J. Salt (father of John James Salt who was unable to attend on the day the photograph was taken), Percy Denham, William Millward.
Front row: John Goldstraw, James Millward, Lt. Cyril E. Crump, George T. Titterton, Ralph Mellor.
This photograph was presented to St. Bartholomew's Church by Butterton Peace Celebration Committee in 1918. Reuben Salt must also have been absent when the photograph was taken as the photographer has skilfully inserted his head and shoulders into the back row.
