Description:This postcard view shows the National Schools on Market Square (also known as School Square). Built in 1818 by Joseph Potter and paid for by Lord Hatherton, it was enlarged in 1889 in memory of Edward Richard Littleton, 2nd Baron Hatherton. In 1912 the school roll consisted of 122 boys and 100 girls. The headmaster was Albert E. Rogers and the mistress was Miss Annie Kilburn. In 1909 an Infants School was added.
On the left is a part view of the Schoolmaster's house, built in 1818, and on the right is the new school building of 1889. The location is now (January 2021) known as Market Place and the buildings are occupied by St. Michael's First School.
