Description:The station was opened in 1848 by the North Staffordshire Railway Company, (NSR): it is Grade II* listed. The glazed roof dates from 1893. On the extreme right there is a W. H. Smith newsagents stall, next to the cafeteria and bar.

The archway in the centre of the photograph is the main entrance to the platforms from the Booking Hall. Over the arch there is a war memorial dating from 1922: The inscription on the arch reads: 'IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE RAILWAY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR'. Bronze plaques are mounted to the pillars at the sides of the archway bearing the names of the fallen. The plaques are protected by period railings. Research by The North Staffordshire Railway Study Group identified that six names had been omitted from the memorial. An additional plaque was commissioned in 2016 to honour them.
