Description:Painted by Ivy Milner in 1979 from a photograph dating from around 1860. Mary Walker standing outside the thatched Black Lion Inn, Hollow Lane, Cheddleton. Mary's husband James was a victualler at the time of their marriage in 1842, as was his father, and census returns show that the Walker family were living at the Black Lion in 1851 and 1881. In 1872 the Black Lion and adjacent properties were put up for auction. As well as being resident at the Black Lion James Walker is identified as occupying and having rights over two meadows adjacent to the Caldon Canal. James's name can be discerned over the door in the painting. Mary died in 1877 and James in 1885. Ivy May Milner lived with her husband, Merton, at 'Windy Arbour', 411, Cheadle Road. She died in 1983 aged 80.
