Description:A painting by Bill Webster in L.S. Lowry's style painted in April 2023, showing Longton in 1875.
The view looks east along Uttoxeter Road (formerly High Street) with the Union Hotel on the corner with Commerce Street on the immediate right. The Union Hotel was an old coaching inn dating to around 1800 and was built on land previously owned by John Turner's family, potters to Royalty. The Union Hotel is now (2023) occupied by Stevens' solicitors.
The white painted building on the left starts with no.1 High Street which in the 1870s was occupied by Abberley's leather goods shop. The shop was formerly owned by George Townsend who also occupied St. George's Pottery at the top of Wharf Street (Bridgewood Street) built in 1794. This works later became Tams & Lowe's and then from 1878 William Lowe on his own, but has since been demolished.
1 and 3 Uttoxeter Rd are still standing (2023) but 5 to 15 have been demolished.
