Description:Deakin's Cooper's shop, 1 and 3 Derby Street, Leek. Standing to the left is Thomas Deakin (1828-1913) who had his business in these premises by 1871. His father Samuel had started the business in 1828 and is listed as a cooper in Derby Street in the 1841 census. Thomas' wife Ann (nee Smith) stands alongside together with a man and two young children. In the 1911 census Thomas is listed as a dairy cooper. Dairy or white coopers specialised in making buckets, tubs, churns and other wooden items for the dairy trade. Wooden yokes used by milkmaids to carry two buckets can be seen suspended either side of the doorway. Thomas retired in about 1910 and at the time of his death, aged 84, he lived at 6, Westwood Road. Ann died in 1916 aged 87. The premises is currently (2024) occupied by E. Grainger’s China and Glassware shop.
