Description:Leek copper half penny token. During the 19th century it was common for publicans, licencees and shopkeepers to issue their own tokens or 'checks'. They could be spent on goods sold at the named shop, and they also served as advertisements for the business. Obverse: 'FOR CHANGE NOT FRAUD 1794'. Blindfolded figure of Justice holding scales in one hand, sword in the other. Reverse: 'LEEK COMMERCIAL HALFPENNY 1793'. Box and bale overlaid with winged staff entwined with two serpents (Caduceus).
