Description:Greengate Street looking towards Bridge Street, Stafford.

On the left is No. 20 Greengate Street, a mid-18th century Grade ll listed building occupied by Currys electrical stores who moved to No. 56 Greengate Street in 1991 before relocating to its present (2025) location on the Madford Retail Park, Foregate Street.

Next door, No’s. 21and 22 are also Grade ll listed and were originally an early 18th century house. At the time of this picture they were occupied at street level by H. Howard, Opticians and Smethurst & Son, Jewellers respectively. Howard’s had been at these premises since the early 1920s. Smethurst's had been a family owned business in Stafford for about 100 years.

Centre right is Lotus's shoe shop at No. 23, this is also Grade ll listed dating from early to mid-18th century. Adjacent at No. 24 was W. Thomas & Son's grocery shop and then No. 25 was Dickenson's & Son Ltd. Ironmongers store, both were demolished during 1965-1966 by Costains Ltd. and replaced by a new building housing a branch of the Co-operative Permanent Building Society, later known as the Nationwide Building Society. The spire in the far distance was atop of the tower of the Royal Brine Baths on Bridge Street which were demolished in 1977.
