Description:Lithograph print. A caricature of Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley (1833-1913) by 'Ape'. Appeared in 'Vanity Fair' April 18th 1874. He was a British Army Officer serving in Burma, the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, China, Canada, and widely throughout Africa. For his services the Major General received the thanks of Parliament and was raised to the peerage as Baron Wolseley, of Cairo and of Wolseley in the County of Stafford. For his services in Russia he was created Viscount Wolseley, of Wolseley in the County of Stafford, and a Knight of St Patrick. He had a reputation for great efficiency which led to the popular phrase "everything's all Sir Garnet" being coined, meaning "all is in order."
