Date:1858

Description:At the time of this watercolour the parish of Sheriff Hales was split between Staffordshire and Shropshire, and St. Mary's Church was part of Brewood Rural Deanery in the Diocese of Lichfield. This changed as a result of the 1894 Local Government Act which saw the whole parish become part of Shropshire.

The north aisle of St. Mary's forms the original church, with the nave built in 1661, and the tower and chancel added in the 18th century. The piers and arches came from Lilleshall Abbey.

This is one of a series of watercolours of all the churches in Lichfield Diocese in Staffordshire, painted by Miss Theodosia Hinckes and Mrs Rebecca Moore (wife of the Archdeacon of Stafford for Lichfield Cathedral) for Lichfield Cathedral between 1857 and 1861.
