Date:1963
Description:This snow scene was taken looking west at St. Chad’s Place in 1963. On the left behind the scaffolding and ladder is the rear of St. Chad's Church. Through the scaffolding the dormers and chimney of the Swan Hotel in Greengate Street can be seen. The building in the centre once stood between St. Chad’s Place and the rear of Dales’ Ironmongers shop which at the time fronted Greengate Street. This and the Tudor shop buildings were demolished soon after the photograph was taken and replaced by a modern block of shops which remain (2025) to the left of St. Chad's forecourt. Towards the right a gable of the Ancient High House rises above the roof level, next is a glimpse of the tower of St. Mary’s Church on the skyline and on the extreme right a man clears the snow from the back of the County Council office buildings which front onto Martin Street.
