Description:A view of a Second World War RAF hut at the disused Hixon Airfield, off Bridge Lane between Amerton and Stowe-by-Chartley as it appeared in the 1990s.

This hut still existed in 2009 when makeshift doors had been added and it was probably used ancillary to an adjacent private horse stable. A photograph dated 17 February 2018 describes it as a Picket Post (a security or watch-keeping location). Some of these huts were occupied after the war by homeless Armed Forces personnel and their families.

RAF Hixon opened in May 1942 as the base of No. 30 Operational Training Unit working on various military bombers and fighter aircraft. The Station was near to the village of Hixon and originally had three runways, hangers, a control tower and other buildings and accommodation for around 2900. In June 1945 the site was given over as a satellite to RAF Stafford and used for storage of surplus RAF vehicles. The site was disposed of in 1962 and is now an Industrial Estate.
