Description:View from outside St. Chad's Church, looking north. On the left is Shaw's House (the first two gables), named after a shoemaker who lived there in the nineteenth century and thought to have been erected earlier than the Ancient High House next door, which was built in 1595. In 1947 the plaster facade of Shaw's House was restored; the new plaster was painted to represent the timber framing underneath. The shops on the ground floor of Shaw's house in this image are the Scotch Wool and Hosiery Stores, and Timothy Whites & Taylors chemists.
