Description:Salt was traditionally made by filling large vats with brine from local springs in Stafford, evaporating this and – after evaporation – taking out the salt. To meet the needs of industry for large quantities of salt at low cost, salt production was developed from evaporation of the brine in large pans to today’s highly automated vacuum plants. Stafford, although always a junior partner to the larger Cheshire firms, did – in its productive years – produce almost 8% of the country’s output from both open pan and vacuum plants.
