This lithograph is a romanticised image of the Duke and his horse, surveying the scene of his victory at Waterloo some years after the battle. The Lion's Mound (Butte de Lion) which can be seen in the distance was completed in 1826 as a monument to the Dutch Prince of Orange. The memorial on the far right (in the form of a severed column) commemorates Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Alexander Gordon, who was killed during the battle.
