Description:A building on this site known as "The Horns' can be seen on the tithe map of about 1845. The house, buildings and several nearby fields were allocated to James Dutton, a carpenter and in later life, a farmer. Harrod's Directory of 1870 has James living at The Horns. Kelly's directory of 1872 has James Dutton a beer retailer at Slitting Mills (sic). He is described as an Innkeeper at his daughter Harriet's wedding in 1879.
The landlord from about 1884 to 1900 was William Henry Williams. It is still licensed premises (2018).

Mr Stephen Adams contributed the following reminiscence:
"The neighbouring pool was known as Dutton's Pool. When we were kids, we tended to call the pool the Horns pool. In the 60's the pub still had its panelled, mirrored Victorian public bar (Mrs Rushton ran the pub then). It still had the hole in the wall for sale of sweets, pop and crisps - handy when the shop opposite was closed for the evening."
