Description:'The East prospect of Burton upon Trent in the County of Stafford.' Shows a thirty-four arched bridge, and the town extended on the far side of the river. Taken from the heights of Stapenhill, on the Derbyshire side. The town is small. Below the illustration is letterpress text describing the town and some of the landmarks. Drawn and engraved by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck.
This is one of the very few imagaes that shows the stepping stones across a branch of the River Trent known as the Fleet - the top right branch of the river. People walking from Stapenhill would used the ferry, walked across the Washlands and then used the stepping stones to get into town. The Ferrybridge was opened in 1889, and a viaduct opened in 1890 which ran from the bridge to Green Street, replacing the stepping stones over the Fleet.
