Description:A view of the High Street taken from the Market Square, looking north, before pedestrianisation. On the left is Oliver's shoe shop, formerly Pyatt's grocers, later occupied by The Lounge bar and now (2025) by Bod. On the other side of the street can be seen Taylor's bakers and confectioners, the Trustees Savings Bank and Barclays Bank. The woman in this view is believed to be Mrs Edith Bell who ran a corner shop on the corner of Lichfield Street and Abbey Street, currently occupied by 'Flames Takeaway' shop. Born Edith Mary Durham in 1911, her occupation is listed in the 1939 Register as a fore-mistress in the boot and shoe trade and she was living with her brother Thomas J Durham in what had been the parental family home in Mill Street. She married William Bell in July 1940, and her death was registered in February 1986. This photograph was taken by Stafford photographer Tony Boydon.
