Description:This decorative building was once the Empire Hotel which stood on the corner of Gaolgate Street and Salter Street.

At the time of the photograph the ground floor was occupied by the “Brighter Homes” wallpaper and paint shop. On the right is a branch of Melia’s, who were grocers and tea dealers. On the first floor was R.T. Davies furniture, carpets and bedding.

In later years the building was demolished and the replacement had a succession of occupants including: Marsden International fashion shop, a branch of Sketchley dry cleaners, for several years it was a Costa coffee shop and it is currently a Little Red Fox Play Café. On the right included: a Golden Egg Restaurant and a Vodafone phone shop.
