Description:A view of Greengate Street taken in 1966.

On the extreme left there is a part view of a parade of shops completed around 1963, replacing Dale’s Ironmongers shop which was demolished in the early 1960s. Also on the left, the Tudor style building is Martin’s Bank and the Prudential Assurance offices, the ground floor later became a café and then a menswear shop called Terraces. Adjacent is the Oddfellows Hall which remains (April 2025). Newbold Opticians occupied the ground floor and later it became Harvey’s shoe repairs and key cutting shop.

Next along is the junction with Tipping Street. On the right is an Elmo supermarket built on the site of the Alexandra Hotel which closed in 1961 and was demolished the following year. Elmo was a store selling food and household items at bargain prices and they gave Gold Bond stamps with purchases which were collected and stuck into a book which could be exchanged for discounts or reward gifts. The store is currently a branch of the chain of Superdrug stores.
