Description:View of the former Stafford and Stone Co-operative Society Ltd. building on the corner of Gaol Road (left) and Browning Street (right).

This Co-op store has the date of 1907 on its stonework, also 'CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LIMITED' can still be seen on the stonework at roof-eaves level. It replaced an earlier store which was said to have been built in 17 weeks, including the dismantling of the previous store. It was built by Messrs. Sandy, Butters & Co. to the design of Architect R.A. Glass, as the Co-op’s No. 3 Branch. In later year the building changed use on several occasions.

On the right is Aston’s Furniture Warehouse in Browning Street. Aston's were furniture manufacturers who had premises near Gaol Square from the 1920's, previously having premises in Foregate Street. They were in Browning Street by 1925. They sold "Every Household Requisite - at the Lowest Prices". Around 2010 the building was converted into residential flats.

The car is an Austin A40 Farina. Note the 'finger-post' direction indicator on a column situated on an island base at the junction.
