Joseph Reilly (died 1909) was one of two survivors of the Charge of the Light Brigade (during the Battle of Balaklava in 1854) who ended up living in Burton.
Born in Yorkshire, at the time of the battle Joseph was a private in the 17th Lancers. He took his Army pension at the age of 41. He settled in Burton upon Trent and married local woman Annie Ison from Horninglow. Joseph went to work as a brewery clerk and they lived at Derby Street initially before moving to a larger house on Derby Road. They had four children and Joseph seems to have done well in his second career, as by the age of 60, census records have him 'living on his own means' rather than working and the family has a live-in servant. He lived to be 81.
Interestingly, Burton's other 'Light Brigade' survivor, George Terry, was also from Yorkshire, served in the 17th Lancers and is also buried at Stapenhill cemetery with his wife.
