Description:Alf Newey famously rode Eremon, the winner of the Grand National in 1907, trained by Tom Coulthwaite from his Hazel Slade stables. Coulthwaite also trained two other Grand National winners: Jenkinstown, ridden by Bob Chadwick in 1910 and Grakle ridden by Bob Lyall in 1931.

Alfred Newey, one of 14 siblings, was born in Belle Vale, Halesowen on the 26 February 1882 and died on the 2 June 1940 in Cheltenham. His father was a coal miner. He was 20 before becoming attached to Laurence Rooney’s stable at Rawnsley, Hednesford in 1902 and he was still riding in 1923 at the age of 41. After retiring from race riding, he trained horses at Prospect House, Hednesford before moving to Bishop’s Cleeve, Cheltenham.”
