Description:This photograph taken from the steps of St. Matthew’s Church, Walsall, looks along the High Street on a Market Day. Attached to the building on the right is a traditional pawnbroker’s sign of three brass balls suspended from a bracket.

Although there is still a regular market held in Walsall, many of the buildings in this view have since been demolished and replaced by various business and retail premises. Currently (2026), on the left the site is occupied by a large Asda supermarket.

Photographed by Arthur Farrington who was a member of the Walsall Photographic Society.
