Description:Sampson Erdeswicke’s tomb, in the chancel of All Saints’ Church, Sandon, pictured after the completion of conservation work funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The tomb depicts Sampson Erdeswicke (c.1538-1603) of Sandon Hall and was made in 1601. The two kneeling mourners are his two wives, Elizabeth and Mary. Sampson Erdeswicke was an early historian of Staffordshire whose 'Survey of Staffordshire' was published after his death in 1717 and 1723. With the tomb are a series of altar-tombs with incised alabaster and sandstone slabs commemorating his ancestors. There are also wall paintings of genealogical trees with heraldic shields relating to the Erdeswicke and associated families.
