Date:31st of January 1874

Description:A watercolour of the village of Mow Cop with the inscriptions “Summer House, Church and part of Village of Mow-Cop, Staffordshire.” and “D. J.B. Jany 31st 1874”. It has been suggested that ‘J.B.’ is James Bateman (1811-1897) of nearby Biddulph Grange.

The view shows the eastern, Staffordshire side of Mow Cop with Mow Cop Castle at the top of the hill, a folly built by the Wilbraham family of Rode Hall, Cheshire in about 1750 as an unusual summerhouse and focal point. Below and to the right is St. Thomas’ church, built in 1841-1842.
