Date:1890 - 1916 (c.)

Description:The City Brewery Co. (Lichfield) Ltd. was founded in 1874. The brewery, which stood on Birmingham Road, burnt down in 1916 and was not rebuilt. The company was bought by Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries in 1917. The City Brewery’s Maltings survived the fire and remained in operation until 2005.

This brass beer cask bung collar lined the large filling hole of the cask. It would be stopped with cork or wood after filling. The engraving indicated the ownership of the cask for its subsequent return to the brewery for re-use. A smaller, usually un-engraved collar was used for the dispensing hole where a tap would be fitted.

Acknowledgement: This example is part of a displayed collection at the (free) Museum at Waterperry Gardens near M40 Oxford Services. An unfortunate reflection from the display glass overlies the central portion of the image.
