Description:A postcard view of what is thought to be the working-model of locomotive ‘The Marchioness of Stafford’ which was exhibited by the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), together with the actual locomotive, at 'The Inventions' Exhibition held in London in 1885.

A one-sixth scale model, together with a length of track on a baseboard and a scale shovel, is held by The Science Museum with the catalogue reference 1896-85. The real ‘Marchioness of Stafford’ was one of LNWR’s Dreadnought Class locomotives used for express passenger traffic haulage. It was designed by their Chief Mechanical Engineer, Francis William Webb, who had been born in Tixall Rectory, Tixall, in 1836. This class was scrapped entirely between 1903 and 1905.

The postcard was published by The Science Museum and printed by McCorquadale & Co. Ltd., with Crown Copyright. McCorquadale was founded in 1898 as printers of posters, travel guides, timetables and other ephemera for the London, Midland & Scottish, and London, North Western Railways; Located at Cardington Street, Euston Square, London.
