Description:A postcard view of locomotive 'The Marchioness of Stafford', No. 2798, built in 1885 by the London & North Western Railway (LNWR).

'The Marchioness of Stafford' was exhibited at the 'Inventions Exhibition' in London, 1885, along with a working scale model of the locomotive together with several other LNWR innovations. It was one of forty locomotives built as LNWR’s ‘Dreadnought Class' between 1884 and 1888 at their Crewe Works. It was used for express passenger traffic haulage. It was designed by Francis William Webb, the Chief Mechanical Engineer, who had been born in Tixall Rectory, Tixall, in 1836. This class was scrapped entirely between 1903 and 1905.
