Description:Dewhurst’s Butchers shop is pictured on Greengate Street, Stafford, with on the left a glimpse of the Bear Inn which remains (2026) and an unknown shop on the right. All of these buildings remain although over the years the ground floor of the two shops has changed use on several occasions.

Around the time of this photograph Dewhurst’s also had branch in Crabbery Street and in the 1970s one in the Sheridan Centre, along with branches in Rugeley and Stone. At one time owned by the Vestey family, Dewhurst’s was part of a large chain in 1923 of around 3,000 Butchers shops in the UK. In 1984 Dewhurst merged with Baxter’s Butchers. In 1997 the number of branches peaked at about 1,400 shops. However, with declining sales mainly due to supermarket competition Dewhurst’s disappeared from High Streets in 2006.
