Description:This view taken on Gaol Square shows Gaolgate Street on the left and Mount Street in the centre which is unrecognisable today (2026).

Henry Porter's menswear shop is on the left and a gents hairdressers saloon can be seen further around the corner on Mount Street. Across the road on the right there is W.H. Bigham & Son Ltd., ladies and gentleman’s tailoring and drapery shop (closed 1970). The town gasometer is visible in the background. The vehicle emerging at the junction is a Morris Minor 1000 Series III.

In the 1970s all these buildings were demolished to make way for the Sheridan Centre development. In later years it was partly demolished and given a £5 million redevelopment which officially re-opened in 2003 as Gaolgate Place. There is only a small portion of Mount Street remaining which is from the covered walk-way entrance to the nearby Iceland store leading to the junction with Broad Street.
