Description:Congreve House, Walton-on-the Hill, Stafford.

This Grade II Listed 17th century timber framed building was clad in brick around the 18th century. It is the birthplace of Lieutenant-General Sir William Congreve, 1st Baronet of Walton (1742-1814). He was an Artillery Officer who oversaw major improvements in gunpowder production and artillery. His eldest son was also called William Congreve (1772-1828), he succeeded his father as the 2nd Baronet and is famous for inventing the Congreve Rocket, which was used extensively by the British Military.
