Description:This view looks south from the corner of 'Averil's Entry' and St. Mary's Grove along St. Mary’s Place. On the left two men pose for the photographer against the rear door of Chas. E. Morgan's an old-established Wine and Spirits Merchants of 57 Greengate Street. The doorway has since been bricked up and the premises are currently (2025) occupied by Waterstone's book shop. Please contact us if you recognise either of the two men. From St. Mary’s Grove, 'Averil's Entry' enters Greengate Street between Greggs a chain bakery shop and Boots pharmacy and beauty store. In earlier years Averil's Chemists occupied an old timber-framed building with the upper story jetted-out over the alleyway; this stood until 1961 and was situated on the Boots site. Several of the buildings on the left were demolished around 1965 to make way for the Bratt & Dyke department store; this later became Court’s furnishers and is now a MacDonald’s fast food restaurant. In the distance beyond St. Mary's Gate there is a glimpse of buildings in the yard area at the back of the Swan Hotel. On the right is a part view of St. Mary's Church and the edge of its churchyard.
