Description:The front doorway to No. 31 (together with No. 33) Market Square, Rugeley, with a stuccoed Tuscan pilaster door-case, curved segmented pediment and triglyphs on the frieze. Also known as ‘Landor House’, this Grade II listed building was built by one Erasmus Darwin, merchant, in 1649. Robert Landor made alterations in 1733 which included a new frontage. It was sold in 1808 by Robert's grandson, the poet Walter Savage Landor. During the next seventy years it had various owners and tenants. At some time before 1829 it was divided into two, the left portion being used as a printing office. By 1892 this was a branch of The National and Provincial Bank, later amalgamated with other banks to become the National Westminster Bank and then became the NatWest Bank which closed in September 2017. At the time of this photograph there is now (2025) a charity shop on the ground floor with the remainder of the building being converted to a house of multiple occupancy (HMO).
