Description:Ewart Sydney Heath’s Sneyd Mill Works situated on Leonora Street, Burslem.
The Heath family has been involved in the pottery industry since 1875. Born in 1914, Ewart Sydney Heath started work in the family business in 1928 and was still executive chairman of Sneyd Oxides at the age of 80 in 1993. The company is now (2026) known as Sneyd Ceramics Limited, and develops and supplies colours and glazes used in modern-day ceramics, supplying all sectors of the industry including Churchill China and the Portmeirion Group as well as small individual potters, schools and other educational facilities.
In this photograph the ground floor has a central door with stone step, semi-circular light and decorated chamfered stone arch with ornate keystone and supports. There are two sash windows with plain stone sills and lintels. The lower panes are frosted glass with 'Offices' inscribed on them with various decorative features. There is a modern factory complex to the rear which was added between 1900 and 1924.
The car on the left is an Austin Maxi registered 1979-80 and the other is a Jaguar XJ series registered 1977-78.
