Description:The main entrance to The Ring, Great Haywood.
By 1810, the village on the Shugborough estate had gone. The cottages were purchased one-by-one and demolished as their leases expired. Many of the villagers had moved to new locations in Great Haywood. One such was known as 'The Ring' due to the hollow heptagonal construction of the building. 'The Ring' was probably the work of Samuel Wyatt, who also designed Shugborough’s Stafford and Lichfield Lodges.
The cottages were joined, but their entrance doors opened onto a central courtyard in which was a well, a communal oven, a wash house and above was a school. Each cottage had its own place for fuel.
The Ring was demolished in 1965. The name has been retained for a development of detached bungalows on the site which are arranged radially around a central access road.
