Description:The White Lion Inn was built on the site of the medieval St. John's Hospital and Chapel; the rear structure of the inn included stonework from the old chapel.
Timber framing inside was dated to 1620. The remains of a malt-drying kiln were also found inside. Internal buttresses may have been from St John's Priory Chapel previously on this site.
The building was demolished about 1976 to make way for the Queensway inner-relief road with the understanding that it was to be dismantled and stored for rebuilding elsewhere in the town. The 'Stafford White Lion Trust' was set up In 1976 with the associated cost sexpected to be at least £25,000. It was said to be then stored in Penkridge. In 2004 in response to a query, councillors admitted they had no knowledge of the whereabouts of the stored items and appealed for information. However a 1981 response to a query to the 'Newsletter' had a response based upon a statement from a 'County Council spokesman' that the timbers had been sold to a businessman who was incorporating them into a 16th Century styled home at Knighton. following concerns on their deterioration whilst in storage. This sale seemingly did not include the stone.
