Description:Cheshire thatcher John Burke working on the Pavilion in Victoria Park. Thatching is one of the oldest building crafts used in Britain. Methods of thatching, and the tools used, have changed little over the years. Thatching techniques can vary from region to region and upon the materials used, but all thatch is laid in 'courses' - overlapping bundles of wheat or straw running the length of the roof. The courses are fixed by trapping them under hazel rods, which are in turn held by iron hooks driven into the rafters. This thatcher is using a leggett to beat the ends of the straw to the correct slope and drive them up tightly under the sways.
