Description:View of the front of the Congregational Chapel (United Reform Church) on Carter Street. The chapel was built in 1827-8 to replace an earlier building in the Market Place, erected in 1792. The adjoining school room was built in 1842 to the design of Thomas Fradgely, a local architect who became the first Town Surveyor. Education was considered very important by the Non-conforming churches in particular, with the size of the school room reflecting this commitment. Here, children, and at first, adults also, could learn about the Bible and how to read and write, in the days before Elementary schools existed to provide a basic education for the poorer classes.
