Date:1921

Description:In 1921 there was a three months strike because of the mine owners refusal to match the salaries the miners had been receiving during the period 1917-21 of Government control of the mines.

For the duration of the 1921 strike, all the pit ponies, about 170 in number, were brought out of the Middle and Institute pits. With the permission of the management these ponies were lovingly cared for and exercised by lads whose job it was to drive them under normal conditions.
