Description:These Bullmastiff puppies belonged to W.H. 'Bill' Farmer whose butcher's shop stood on High Street, Uttoxeter. Bullmastiffs are a large working dog, often associated with gamekeepers. The breed was developed in the mid 19th century by crossing the Mastiff with the Bulldog. It was recognised as a pure breed by the English Kennel Club in 1924. Bullmastiffs are known for their size, strength and speed and their brindle colouring. Photographer: G.S. McCann of Uttoxeter.
