Description:These are scenes in Leek on Thursday 20th August 1925, showing the crowds assembling to watch the unveiling of the Nicholson War Memorial.
"The Monument" as it is commonly called, was presented to the town by Sir Arthur and Lady Nicholson in memory of their son - Lieutenant Basil Leigh Nicholson - and other local men killed in the First World War.
The memorial, which is built of portland stone and stands 90 feet high, was designed by Messrs Thomas Worthington & Sons of Manchester. The tablet was unveiled by Lieutenant General Sir Charles Harrington GBE DSO and was dedicated by the Bishop of Stafford. Lieutenant General Harrington is then seen chatting to old soldiers.
