Description:This is a record of Endon well dressing around 1960. Puddled clay is put onto boards which have been soaking in the local stream for a week – to prevent them taking moisture from the clay. Only natural materials are used – flowers, grasses, moss, bark and so on. The clay is smoothed and designs are marked out. Endon uses whole flower heads to decorate, whereas in Derbyshire they use petals. The patterns marked on the clay are outlined with beech cones or alder cones. The decorated boards are put up on the Friday of Whitsun weekend – now Spring Bank Holiday. On the Saturday there is a thanksgiving service in the church, and the parade – led by the Well Dressing Queen end sees all the activities and events of typical village entertainment.
