Stafford Laundry, circa 1960

Date:1960

Description:Stafford laundry was established in 1899. In 1952 its manager, Arthur Leese, recorded what went on behind the scenes, for showing at Womens Institutes and other societies.
When I first started as a junior you had to learn every job in the laundry. You went from when it was brought in dirty to when it went out clean. You followed it all around, learning every job – so that you’d know what process was going on. And that took about six months of my first year. My first job was pressing handkerchiefs, which I though was marvellous. And I got sixpence a week extra for pressing handkerchiefs. I progressed from there to doing white coats, shirts, everything.

This film also features in the documentary; “Stafford, A Stroll Down Memory Lane” produced by Staffordshire Film Archive.
