Sydney Barnes, Cricketer

Date:1931

Description:Staffordshire had not really had a great deal of success in minor county cricket until the name of Sydney Barnes was associated. And that changed Staffordshire’s importance as well. His performances with the ball meant that Staffordshire started to become quite a good side. And very very early on he was actually the main instigator in them winning the Minor Counties Championship three years in succession.
“He realised he was a good cricketer, and he scored centuries for Staffordshire, with the bat. Besides 1400 wickets he scored quite a few centuries for Staffordshire.”
[Barnes]; “If I’d been out for records, I could have made a lot more runs.”

This film also features in the documentary; “Legends of Cricket – Sydney Barnes”, produced by Ray Johnson, Gary Kelsall and Simon Lowe.
