Stoke vs Nottingham Forest

Date:1904

Description:This newsreel was taken on October 1st 1904 and it shows Nottingham Forest playing Stoke, who turned out in a claret strip. At this time they weren’t allowed to wear red and white stripes as Sunderland had that combination. Stoke won 1 – 0, with agoal in the 4th minute from Frank Whitehouse. Stoke’s captain was Tommy Holford and, making his debut in the Stoke side in this game was Irish international Paddy Sheridan – playing for Stoke. Apparently, this was a superb defensive performance by Stoke to win 1 – 0. This newsreel is very valuable because it shows more camera positions and the camera is moving to try to follow the action – and we can see everything perfectly clearly, so it’s an advance on the early single-shot newsreels.

This film also features in the documentary; “The Story of Stoke City – Every Step Along the Way”, produced by Ray Johnson, Gary Kelsall and Simon Lowe.
