Description:Post card view of the Trent Mersey Canal and Thomas Barnes School to the left.

The original Thomas Barnes Primary School was built in 1717, the extension was added in 1909. The school took its name from Thomas Barnes, who was abandoned as a baby in a Schoolhouse barn. He was called 'Thomas' after the Saint and 'Barnes' after the barn. Thomas was brought up as an orphan and went to Tamworth Grammar School, in the late 17th Century. He then went to London, became a merchant, and later endowed the school.
