Description:A market stall located behind the Town Hall, at the bottom end of George Street where it joins with Market Street. Mr J.H. Johnson, the proprietor of the market stall, selling buttons, ribbons, and laces, is standing on the left.
The facade of Yarrow's, the big clothing store, can be seen in the far background. The 1912 Kelly’s directory lists James Yarrow trading at 21 George Street as ‘hatter, hosier, glover & general outfitter’, his business having been established in 1858. Mr Yarrow retired in about 1919 and the business closed.

The background with dormer windows is probably William Goostry’s clothier and pawnbrokers shop at 24 Market Street. It has been demolished and the entrance to Middle Entry now stands here.

The two-storey furnishing Emporium can be seen in the immediate left, with brass bedsteads and iron and cane chairs visible in the upper windows. This building was replaced in 1920 by the Midland Bank building, now occupied (2019) by Halifax.
